The Corbett History
Nestled in the heart of Northern Michigan, The Chief Resort offers a refined destination where championship golf, exceptional hospitality, and unforgettable experiences come together. Locally owned and thoughtfully developed by Chris and Merrie Corbett, the resort reflects their passion for community, quality, and the natural beauty that defines this region.
Two generations after their family first established roots in the area, Chris and Merrie returned to Northern Michigan and purchased a home near the shores of Torch Lake. While strolling through the charming village of Central Lake, they were drawn to a grand historic building at the corner of Old State Road and Main Street. That building would later become Adam’s Madams, a boutique that remains a beloved stop for both locals and visitors exploring the town.
Originally from the East Coast, Chris and Merrie often missed the coastal flavors and relaxed waterfront atmosphere they grew up with. Inspired to bring a taste of that experience to Northern Michigan, they opened The Blue Pelican, located in the former Chatter Box building at the corner of West Old State Road and East Torch Lake Drive, just down the road from the historic Old Brownwood Restaurant. The restaurant introduced the region to fresh coastal seafood and a laid-back, beach-inspired dining experience that quickly became a local favorite.
Chris’s lifelong passion for golf soon led to the next chapter—creating a destination centered around the game and the Northern Michigan lifestyle. Today, The Chief Resort has grown into a premier gathering place for golf, dining, lodging, and celebrations.
The resort is home to:
- The Chief Golf Course – a premier Northern Michigan golf experience known for its scenic beauty and memorable play
